Religious Life: Shabbat

Shabbat

Exuberant, harmonious singing, teaching and discussions, meditation, drumming and chanting are all part of Shabbat at Emanu-El. We welcome Shabbat with a traditional Kabbalat Shabbat service, and once a month Young Families join in EKS (early Kabbalat Shabbat) with little ones who are becoming familiar with the prayers and melodies and getting to feel comfortable in Temple.

A typical Shabbat morning offers and early Shaharit service at 8 a.m., Junior Congregation in the Chapel or a Family Service in the Vestry. At the Main Service in the Sanctuary, B’nai Mitzvah participate in the regular Shabbat services. They recognize that they are becoming adult members of a thriving congregation, which takes pride in their accomplishments and shares the joy of their simha.

Kappy's Kids
Formerly known as Beit Yeladim, Kappy's Kids is our pre-school Shabbat room which is open for pre-schoolers from birth to 7 years old(children under 3 must be accompained by an adult) open from 10 am - 12:15 pm.  This program of prayer, stories, songs, and activities is led by Alyse Teitelbaum, an experienced pre-school teacher, with the assistance of our teen aides.  The program is offered weekly and is generously funded by the Kapstein family through the Gladys and Sherwin Kapstein Fund.

Minyan Hadash
Minyan Hadash, now in its fourth year, is an exciting addition to Shabbat morning davening at Temple Emanu-El.  It will meet the 2nd and 4th Shabbat of each month at 9:45 a.m. and will finish in time to join together with the entire congregation for Kiddush.  We will not meet during the times of the Chagim and during Shabbatot with major community events.  The style of the minyan is a lay-led, traditional, egalitarian, informal, warm and spirited service. Conducted mostly in Hebrew, different people will be leading the various parts of the service and volunteers are always welcome. This family-friendly service includes a full Torah reading, a very brief D'var Torah, and all of the other parts of the service. People of all ages are welcomed and encouraged to join in and participate. If you would like to be on the Minyan email list so you are notified of all Minyan related events or would like to lead a part, please email to: teminyan@gmail.com
** Minyan dates:
9/12, 10/24, 11/14, 11/28, 12/12, 12/26, 1/9, 1/23, 2/13, 2/27, 3/13/ 3/27, 4/10, 4/24, 5/8, and 5/22.

Soulful Shabbat
Shabbat comes each week to remind us that meaning in our lives lies not in what we accomplish but in being part of the universe.  But how can we do this spiritual work?
Soulful Shabbat is a Saturday morning worship experience that creates a space for pause and reflection by simplifying and slowing down the traditional Shabbat service.
Soulful Shabbat emphasizes silence, quiet melody, meditation, and movement, along with traditional davening and Torah study.

Soulful Shabbat is led by Rabbi Alan Flam and meets on the third Shabbat of each month in the Goldberg Foyer beginning at 10 AM.
