Shabbat Alive
Temple Emanu-El is introducing a new, unique, and vibrant Friday evening service. It is unlike anything we’ve done before! The service welcomes us to wind down together after a hectic week. One hour in length, Shabbat Alive /Shabbat Chai combines musical instruments with both traditional, spirited Kabbalat Shabbat melodies and some wonderfully exuberant new ones as well. The service is completely interactive, with continuous participation by the congregation.
To make Shabbat Alive /Shabbat Chai accessible to everyone, the Temple has purchased a new prayer book, Siddur Kabbalat Shabbat, which is filled with beautiful translations and abundant transliterations. This siddur is in keeping with the spirit of this incredibly lively service, which encourages singing by everyone. The addition of musicians – singers and instrumentalists – will contribute to the joyous sounds. Cantor Mayer, on guitar (did you know our cantor played guitar?), has recruited talented musicians to set the tone and encourage our participation.
Shabbat Alive/Shabbat Chai will begin at 6:15 p.m.and end at 7:15 p.m. A small Oneg Shabbat will follow, to which everyone is invited. Services will be on the first and third Friday evenings of the month. The Shabbat Alive /Shabbat Chai experience has no parallel! Curious? Please join us to see what it is all about!
